The Safety Statistics Reporting Program (SSRP) is a proprietary tool used by AWO and its members to help companies track safety data so they can continuously improve safety performance across the entire industry.
How Does It Work?
Every quarter, AWO members share safety information about their work. The individually-entered, company-specific data is kept confidential, but the "big picture" results help the entire industry improve.

What Do We Track?
To get a full safety picture, the program looks at several important areas:
- Crew Safety: We track how often workers get hurt and what kind of injuries they have. This helps companies create better safety training.
- Falls Overboard: Falling into the water is a big risk. By tracking these incidents, we can find better ways to keep workers on the deck.
- Spills: We measure the amount and number of spills each year to ensure our waterways stay clean.
- Near Misses: We look at "near misses" — situations when an accident almost happened — so we can reduce hazards and prevent incidents.
Why Is This Important?
You can't fix a problem if you don't know it exists. Collecting this data helps AWO:
- Spot Trends: If many vessels are having the same problem, we can work to find a solution together.
- Set Goals: We measure progress and challenge member-companies to be safer every year.
- Show Progress: We have the receipts to prove that the tugboat, towboat, and barge industry is the safest, most environmentally friendly, and most fuel-efficient way to move cargo in America.
