AWO Near Miss 23-08 Missing Safety pin on Shore Cargo Arm

While preparing to send the cargo arms back to the dock, the second mate discovered that the safety latch pin on the leg of the two cargo arms were missing. This safety latch pin prevents the larger securing pin from falling out, allowing the leg to free fall away from the arm. The second mate used his stop work authority and informed the dock operator of the missing safety pins. Once the second mate pointed out the severity of one of the legs rattling loose and falling to the dock, right next to where the operator was standing, the operator went to his shack and returned with spare latch pins. These were promptly sent up, installed and the evolution continued without incident.
